Date of interview:January 7, 2015
Current Position:EHS Specialist-Regulatory & Trade
NP-USA Group company:NPA Coatings Inc.
Location:OH
Year Hired:3.5 Years

Describe what role you play at your company?

My position at NPAC focuses on regulatory and trade compliance. I ensure that the materials we buy and sell, including finished goods and raw materials, are in compliance with the regulations set forth by legislation in the countries in which we do business. I am also responsible for authoring our SDS's and classifying finished goods for shipping. I monitor proposed and active legislation that could affect or change chemical and/or trade regulations.

What do you like best about your company?

I have awesome co-workers; I get to work with great people every day. Together we have a terrific work culture and that makes NPAC a great company to work for. NPAC values people on a personal level, and I never feel as though I am just another cog in the wheel. There are many opportunities throughout the year to grow not only professionally but personally.

What do you like most about your job?

I love that I get to work with so many departments within the company. Since my job is involved with many different departments there is always something to do. It is fascinating to see how one thing affects so many other aspects of the business. This job has opened my eyes to many aspects of operating a chemical business that I never knew existed, and I am continuing to learn new things every day. There is never a dull day at the office!

What skills or personal traits do you have that contribute to your success?

Flexibility and being able to keep track of all the little details, I am always breaking down our formulas to the most basic level possible since that is where the chemical regulations come into play. A formula can have as many as 200 parts after I get done breaking down all of the raw materials into their individual chemical components. Since many aspects of my job involve working with other departments, it is crucial to be able to keep track of the pieces that make up the whole so that the big picture comes together smoothly. Flexibility is also important since new projects are always coming across my desk. I regularly have to set aside what I am currently working on to re-prioritize projects.

What do you like to do when you're not at work?

I love to cook, bartend, eat good food (especially sushi), and try new beers. Bartending is a social release for me. I am a social butterfly so I love getting to meet and talk to a ton of new people every week. It also helps fund my habit of buying new kitchen equipment and eating out regularly, without breaking the bank. Since I bartend at a sushi restaurant it is an all-around win.
